The Cottage & More

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

It is impossible to find the words that would capture this view of the sea and the Porcupine Islands at the end of our lawn which ranks as one of the most beautiful and majestic, scenic spots in the US. Not surprisingly, the first name for the Shore Path Cottage was “Mare Vista,” view of the sea. At low tide explore the tide pools, or walk along the rocks. On our porch at night you can listen to the sea beneath a dazzling array of stars.

The Cottage

Shore Path Cottage PorchBuilt in 1880,the Shore Path Cottage (the word “cottage” is typical Maine understatement for the grand old houses on the coast of Maine) is an architectural gem with many unique details like our unique bannister and paneled wood ceilings. Our distinctive sloping roof and large, original windows and our beautiful sloping lawn, presided over by our maiden masthead looking out to sea, inspire our guests to photograph and paint. The cottage benefits from a marvelous southeastern exposure, filling the rooms with sunlight throughout the day. Forty three years ago in 1973, when the present owner first arrived and wide-eyed gazed, at this unique spot, she knew it was a blessing to be shared. After these many years, for us, the Chester family and your hosts, this experience of being here has never ceased to be breathtaking and is always forever new.

The Shore Path

Crisp afternoon on the Shore PathThe Shore Path is a unique, century old walk along the shores of Frenchman Bay. Originating in 1880, thanks to the belief of the town officials that this incredible view should be enjoyed by the public, the scenic 1/2 mile path begins at the town pier and winds its way along the rocky coast. The Shore Path Cottage, coincidentally built that same year, is just about half way along the 1/2 mile walk. Our guests enjoy the short stroll across our lawn to the Shore Path where they can experience the scent of the sea, the fragrance of the beach roses along the path, and the breathtaking view of the Porcupine Islands in the bay. At dawn’s first light, many of our guests take their cup of coffee across the lawn down to the Shore Path to begin their day with a spectacular sunrise.
